The Master of Engineering Sciences with specialization in Mechanical Engineering is a research program oriented mainly to contributing in the scientific and technological development of the country, integrating Mechanical Engineering specialists to the community who can contribute to the development of the discipline through investigation practice.
The main objective of this program is to train researchers in the field of Mechanical Engineering Sciences. It is based on the encouragement of technological research through knowledge transfer and the development and introduction of computational tools applied to Mechanical Engineering.
Educate graduate students who can participate efficiently and creatively in the scientific and technological development. This will be achieved through the investigation practice in productive Engineering consultant companies, in laboratories or research centers.
Prepare graduate students to participate efficiently and creatively in the development and continuity of studies in doctorates programs. This way, they will contribute to the country’s development.
Contribute to innovation, adaptation and improvement in the typical processes and technologies of this discipline through the training of graduate students.
The graduate students of the Master of Engineering Sciences, Mechanical Engineering will develop competencies in:
Generation of innovative solutions and proposals for specific problems related to Mechanical Engineering. This way, they will contribute to research strengthening and technological development in the area.
Collaborate with the development and execution of scientific and technological projects that provide original and innovative solutions; with the aim of adapting and optimizing processes and technologies used in chemical, physical and mechanical transformations of matter, to obtain intermediate and final products.
In the area of Solid Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer, evaluate and adapt new technologies towards its productive atmosphere in a competitive and environmentally respectful scenario.
LINES OF RESEARCH
Characterization of properties of materials
This line of research includes the experimental, analytical or numerical determination of the properties of diverse materials of Engineering, which are both mechanical and thermal or fluid dynamical. Materials used in traditional Engineering (metals, wood, cardboard, oils, etc.) or in unconventional Engineering (for example, biological tissue) require the study of their capacities to deform, recover their shape or run in different conditions. Therefore, it is a part of Materials Science, which is particularly directed to the observation and description of the properties and response of materials to different external actions. For this, it is necessary to consider those materials in different uses, processes or applications.
This line of research contemplates the behavior of solid systems in a conceptual, analytical, experimental and numerical manner, describing the dynamic behavior of structures and mechanisms with which it is possible to carry out productive or use operation.
Heat and Mass Transfer
This line of research analyses conceptually, analytically, experimentally and numerically the thermal state of matter in its different states, including processes of phase change and matter transfer, particularly transfer by conduction, convection and radiation in productive systems such as solidification processes, metal conversion, refrigeration, energy generation, etc.
This area studies analytically, experimentally and numerically the behavior of liquid or gaseous continuous media, both in laminar and in turbulent conditions, and also the dynamic response of free surfaces and the fluid-structure interaction. It is generally applied to internal flows, such as:
- The outflow in pipes or ducts
- External flows, as the ones that produce lifting and dragging in objects, e.g. plane wings
- Other issues of a diverse Engineering that requires the study of the continuous media, like the ocean swell, filling of molds, the bloodstream, etc.
OUTREACH AND INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS
The Universidad de Santiago de Chile has an outreach and international affairs policy that contemplates different agreements with institutions from the academic and social scenarios. In the case of the Master of Engineering Sciences, Mechanical Engineering, it has a series of international agreements signed by the Faculty of Engineering with the following universities:
- Asociación de Universidades Grupo Montevideo (AUGM), which gathers 20 universities from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay.

- University of Minas Gerais (Brazil).
- Universidad Estatal de Bolívar (Ecuador).
- National Autonomous University of Mexico (Mexico).

- Universitat Politècnica de València (Spain).
Additionally, since 2000 the program has established agreements with other institutions through direct cooperation actions between academics from the program and other departments and research centers, as the following ones:
- Carnegie Mellon University – Institute for Complex Engineered Systems (ICES), USA.
- University of Navarra – Center of Studies and Technical Research (CEIT), Spain.
- Ecoles des Mines de France, France.
- Instituto Alberto Luiz Coimbra de Pós-Graduação e Pesquisa de Engenharia (COPPE), Brazil.
- A.V. Luikov Heat and Mass Transfer Institute, Belarus.
The previous agreements have allowed professors to stay in these institutions and participate in different projects.
